GMI-EM Thailand Tsunami Relief Mission

January 7th ~ 15th, 2005

Summary:

When thinking about our short mission trip to Thailand, one main thought comes to mind: God is faithful and always in control. Through the events leading up to our departure—after the initial decision to go—and through the experiences of the trip itself, God clearly demonstrated that He had a specific plan for sending the people on our team individually and the team collectively. As the days began to unfold, the unique giftings of each person began to surface and there was the definite realization that God hand picked each person for this team.

Everything began the Sunday before we departed. On that particular Sunday service, we collected a special offering to help the victims of Southeast Asia. We collected it with the intent of sending it through a non-profit organization that was doing relief work in the area. But after the offering was collected, Pastor Steve Rim expressed his wishes for the money to be sent by one of our church members actually going. By the end of the service, myself and a handful of others were convicted by God to go.

So, it was decided. We were going. But that willingness to go had to be coupled with an actual destination to go to. And as the team leader, the next couple of days were filled with prayer and research to decide on a specific location to offer aid. We didn’t want to just go without any connections because that would prove to be unproductive. But without any missionaries connected to GMI in the region, it wasn’t as easy as I thought to find an organization or ministry that was looking for volunteer workers to actually go. Most were only interested in monetary support.

But through an unbelievable sequence of events—spontaneous emails, phone calls, and meetings over here and abroad—on Wednesday morning, three days after we had made the decision to go, the road was opened for us to go the Thailand. So immediately, we planned out an itinerary and bought plane tickets. Seventeen of us were going to fly from Los Angeles to Bangkok—connecting through Osaka, Japan—and from there, take a shorter flight to the island of Phuket, where missionary Hong Kyung Hwan bases his ministry.

Immediately, our team was able to see firsthand the devastation caused by the December 26th tsunami. Trees were uprooted. Vehicles were overturned and crushed. Most structures were completely destroyed by the powerful waves. And the buildings that were still standing had walls completely blown out with pillars collapsed. It truly resembled a war zone where a bomb had just blown up. We were all wide-eyed in amazement of what we were witnessing.

Right away, we began to work. From the next morning, we went to the small community of Nam Khem where we would focus our efforts for the next five days. This was a community that had 1,500 homes, 90% of which were completely destroyed by the tsunami. We immediately separated in three teams, learned a few Thai phrases, and walked through the torn streets searching for families to help. Over a period of four days, we shoveled thousands of pounds of dirt, mud and garbage and managed to restore close to a dozen homes, as well as a fish hatchery. We also taught English to about 200 children at a near by Elementary and Middle School.

During our short stay there, our team was able to furnish equipment and supplies for the first mission’s base in that region of Thailand. We were able to provide $10,000 to buy a utility vehicle to be used by the missionaries to transport supplies and travel the terrain. We also, provided the first architectural renderings of the future first church/child care center/orphan dormitory of the area. But most importantly, we gave the existing missionaries the spiritual and emotional support to enhance their ministries in the months and years ahead.

Even through the initial uncertainty, God showed His faithfulness to our team every step of the way. This trip can be compared to the Christian life. Though we don’t exactly know the path before us, we walk by faith. Not on our own strength or knowledge, but trusting in the Spirit of God that leads and inspires us. Through our obedience as God’s children, He can use all of us in phenomenal ways to expand His kingdom.

May all glory be to God!
